Question #128:

How would you describe the difference between ditching and belly landing? Paraphrase: What is ditching and belly landing?

Answer:

You know, ditching and belly landing are absolutely different terms, describing landing on different types of surfaces. Ditching is landing on water, while belly landing is landing on other types of surfaces but without landing gear. I think ditching is more dangerous because during ditching aircraft can be destroyed very fast, and then can go under the water. Ditching also requires more attention and flight experience

Essentially, the difference hinges on where the aircraft is making its forced landing. If an aircraft were to ditch, it would be making a controlled landing on water, often as a last resort. In contrast, if it were to make a belly landing, it would be coming down on land without extending its landing gear. In other words, it’s the difference between making a water landing and a gear-up landing on a runway or field.
