If you encounter a volcanic ash cloud, it can severely impact engine performance and visibility, which makes a safe landing much more challenging. In other words, if you’re in that scenario, you’d conditionally need to take every precaution, follow established procedures, and possibly divert to avoid the ash altogether. In summary, while it’s not entirely impossible, it’s definitely a high-risk situation that pilots take very seriously.
