What is the difference between runway incursion and runway excursion?

Answer:

A runway incursion is an event when aircraft, vehicle or person occupies the RW without ATC permission. In my opinion, it can lead to terrible consequences such as collision and deaths. And runway excursion is an event when aircraft skids off or overruns the RW. Skidding of the aircraft can happen due to poor RW condition or aircraft failure. Overrunning of the aircraft can happen due to rejected TO after V1, aircraft failure and poor RW condition too.

Runway incursion and runway excursion are two distinct types of aviation incidents, each involving different risks and circumstances. A runway incursion is defined as the unauthorized presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person on the protected area of a runway designated for landing and take-off. This can occur due to miscommunication between controller and pilot or driver, errors in following taxi instructions, low visibility condition, or wildlife. A runway excursion occurs when an aircraft unintentionally departs from the runway surface during takeoff or landing. The aircraft can veer-off and overrun. This may be a consequence of incorrect performance calculation, discrepancy between the declared state of the runway and the actual state, significant overshoot, rejected takeoff after V1, landing gear, brake or tire failure.
