Answer:

Pilots or dispatchers file it for traffic management and search and rescue purposes.

Flight plan contains the aircraft's identification, whether the flight is conducted under IFR or VFR, departure and destination points, route, estimated time of arrival, estimated time of departure, estimated time en route (ETE), cruising altitude, alternate airports, fuel on board, number of persons on board. This information helps ATC manage and coordinate air traffic, and used for search and rescue operations.
